@revolvingpens ….Here is the pen from my previous post (8th pen from the left). I got it from an auction in Japan a couple of months ago… it reminds me of the Pilot pens from the mid 50’s because of the clip. But the big difference the pilot pens have “Pilot”
inscribed, while this pen has “R14k”… your thoughts would definitely help…

The 1926 Jolo Carnival, a local version of the much larger and more famous Manila Carnival, holds a significant place in the history of the American colonial period in the Philippines. While it may not have attracted the same nationwide attention as its Manila counterpart, the Jolo Carnival was a small reflection of the colonial government’s efforts to foster a sense of national unity and showcase the country’s progress, even in a region as historically distinct and resistant as the Sulu Archipelago.

The existence of the Jolo Carnival highlights the complex and often tense relationship between the American colonial government and the Moro people of Mindanao and Sulu. Unlike many other parts of the archipelago, Sulu has a long history of resisting foreign powers, including the Spanish and later the Americans.

By organizing a carnival in Jolo, the Americans aimed to project an image of peace and stability in a region still experiencing armed conflicts and political instability. It was a subtle yet effective way of pacification, using cultural festivals to mask and soften the harsh realities of military control. Although the carnival provided a brief moment of celebration for the town, its deeper significance lies in its role as propaganda for the American colonial administration. When a coin is minted, a planchet is struck and sometimes the planchet is struck “twice” resulting in an error coin which third party graders like NGC would call a “double struck” error. These coins usually command a premium.

Found this pen with a double imprint on its nib………..”error nib” or “error pen” or “error nib on a pen”

No premium paid though on this Vacumatic Major emerald green… Pen came from Spain

It’s funny how a simple design band, with the inscription “Parker Vacumatic” that was done only for a short period of time (maybe a couple of months in 1937) when Parker started coming out with their new sets of Vacumatic pens such as the Maxima, Senior Maxima and Major, would add so much decimal places on the prices of these pens more than 80 years later.

A Historic Gathering

The Manila Summit Conference of 1966, while primarily focused on the Vietnam War, had lasting implications for the region. It solidified alliances, promoted regional cooperation, and laid the groundwork for future diplomatic initiatives.
However, the conference also highlighted the divisions and complexities of Cold War politics. Despite the ambitious goals, the summit ultimately failed to bring about a lasting peace in Vietnam.

Nevertheless, the Manila Summit remains a significant chapter in Philippine history, reminding us of our nation’s role in shaping global events.

Up for auction is one of the largest Philippine Medals at 82.5mm and made of copper nickel. This medal will definitely give the TPGs a hard time and would probably come back in a body bag saying “too big and too heavy to slab.” All pun intended.

Listed as Honeycutt-617 and will be available in the upcoming Bayanihan-Moreton Year-End Auction 2024 on Dec. 1, 2024.

The Huk Rebellion 1954

Peace and Order Campaign Medal

By mid 1950s the Huks were knocking at the gates of Manila. The Huks (Hukbalahap- Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon) a Communist armed group organized during the Jap occupation, refused to surrender their arms after the Liberation and now train their sights to overthrow the first Republic in Asia.
The strong arm tactics employed by the military under President Roxas and Quirino only strengtened the resolve of this Communist group especially after the abusive excesses of some PC and Army units against the peasantry across the country particularly Central Luzon.
What the top politburo of the Huks, did not anticipate was the inspired but desperate move of the beleaguered Pres. Quirino to name a former guerilla leader and Zambales governor, Ramon Magsaysay as the Secretary of National Defense.
Magsaysay, with uncharacteristic singlemindedness to break the back of the rebellion acted swiftly, even ruthlessly in removing abusive military personnel while promoting on the spot deserving ones. He aimed to win the heart and minds of the populace while pounding the rebels to submission. It did help that he had the backing of the U.S. particularly the CIA through an American advisor, Edward Lansdale, a CIA operative posing as a US Air Force officer.
In 1954, the government established a medal “Peace and Order” campaign medal for military and civilian personnel who contributed in the maintenance of peace and order during the Huk rebellion.It was intended that each province would award this medal however only one province complied - Nueva Ecija.

Only 36 medals were awarded to Nueva Ecijans in May 1955. Thus making this medal extremely scare to find.

Mariano Limjap: A Quiet Figure in the Philippine Carnival

Did you know that the renowned Filipino revolutionary and businessman, Mariano Limjap, played a significant role in the early years of the Philippine Carnival? While often overshadowed by his contributions to the Katipunan and the Philippine Revolution, Limjap’s involvement in cultural events like the Carnival offers a glimpse into his multifaceted personality and his dedication to Philippine society.

Apparently, it was Don Mariano’s daughter Leonarda who was the first one to be crowned “Queen of the Orient” garnering 39 out of the 69 votes. But she gave up the “Queenship” as she wanted to travel to Japan with a friend. Initially Don Mariano “didn’t want to be talked about” so he did not give his permission. But despite not giving his permission, it was the “beauty, dignity and patriotism” of Leonarda that made her queen.
